A good thinner is not only used to “make paint thinner”. In real automotive refinishing work, the thinner controls how the paint leaves the spray gun, how the wet film lays on the panel, how the solvent evaporates, and whether the final surface becomes smooth, glossy and repairable.
JLTL Royal Shield Thinner/Reducer-002 is a universal solvent-based automotive paint thinner developed for daily body shop spraying. It is designed for 2K acrylic polyurethane clear coats, 2K solid color topcoats, compatible 2K primers and 1K metallic basecoats.
For normal workshop temperature, JLTL 002 helps painters achieve a more stable spraying feel: better atomization, smoother flow, improved gloss, fewer rough edges and reduced orange peel. It is especially suitable for repair shops that need one reliable thinner for most daily refinishing jobs.
Unlike low-grade industrial solvents, JLTL 002 uses a controlled solvent blend with low moisture content and no active hydrogen interference, helping protect the crosslinking reaction of 2K polyurethane coatings.
JLTL 002 is a blended organic solvent reducer designed to work with automotive refinish coating systems.

JLTL 002 can be used with compatible 2K acrylic polyurethane clear coats to adjust spray viscosity and improve flow. It helps painters obtain a wet, glossy and fuller clear coat surface.
When used with 2K solid color paint, JLTL 002 helps the paint spray more evenly and improves wet film leveling. This is useful for commercial repair, fleet repainting and general collision repair.
For 1K metallic basecoat, thinner selection affects metallic particle orientation. A stable reducer helps the basecoat spray evenly and reduces patchiness, clouding or uneven metallic effect.
JLTL 002 can be used with compatible 2K primer systems where thinner addition is allowed by the primer’s technical data sheet. It helps improve spraying smoothness and substrate coverage.
JLTL 002 helps reduce inventory complexity. Instead of purchasing multiple low-grade solvents for different paints, workshops can use one universal reducer for most normal-temperature jobs.
Best value: daily clear coat, topcoat and basecoat spraying.
Collision repair centers need consistent results across many repair orders. JLTL 002 supports stable viscosity adjustment and predictable spray behavior, helping reduce rework caused by orange peel, dry spray or poor leveling.
Best value: consistent repair quality and lower defect rate.
Used car refinishing requires good appearance at controlled cost. JLTL 002 is suitable for repainting bumpers, panels and exterior parts where balanced gloss, flow and economy are important.
Best value: better finish without moving to the highest-cost thinner grade.
JLTL 002 is easy to position as a high-turnover consumable. It can be bundled with clear coat, hardener, basecoat and primer products for repeat sales.
Best value: regular consumption, easy customer education and repeat orders.
| Grade | Positioning | Recommended Condition | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Performance | Top grade | High-end repair, hot/humid climate | Luxury car repainting, demanding finish |

Choose JLTL 002 when:
The workshop temperature is normal
The repair job is daily automotive refinishing
You need good compatibility with different paint systems
You want stable performance without using premium-grade thinner for every job
Cost control is important but finish quality cannot be ignored
For extreme high temperature, high humidity, luxury vehicle full repainting or large-area high-gloss work, we recommend upgrading to JLTL 001, Premium or High Performance thinner for better solvent balance and longer wet-edge control.
Before adding thinner, check whether the coating is:
2K clear coat
2K solid color topcoat
2K primer
1K metallic basecoat
Always follow the technical data sheet of the main paint product.
JLTL 002 is added according to the paint product’s recommended dilution range. For example:
| Paint Type | Common Thinner Addition Range |
|---|---|
| 2K Clear Coat | Usually 5–15% depending on viscosity and temperature |
| 2K Topcoat | Usually 10–25% depending on paint body and hiding power |
| 2K Primer | According to primer TDS |
| 1K Metallic Basecoat | According to basecoat system requirement |
Note: These are general workshop references. The final ratio should follow the TDS of the coating being used.
For 2K systems, recommended mixing order:
Paint / Clear Coat
→ Add Hardener
→ Stir evenly
→ Add JLTL 002 Thinner
→ Stir again
→ Filter before spraying
Do not pour thinner directly into hardener. Avoid contamination with water, oil or dust.
Use a viscosity cup if available. For many automotive refinishing coatings, spray viscosity is commonly adjusted to a suitable range based on the paint system and spray gun setup.
If no viscosity cup is available, check the paint flow from the mixing stick. The material should run smoothly and continuously, not too thick and not watery.
Before spraying the vehicle, apply a small test panel or hidden area.
Check:
Spray mist fineness
Wet edge
Flow and leveling
Gloss after flash-off
Metallic particle appearance for basecoat
Adjust thinner amount only if necessary.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Suggested Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Orange peel | Paint too thick, pressure too low, wrong gun distance | Add proper JLTL 002 amount, adjust pressure and spray distance |
| Dry spray | Solvent evaporates too fast, gun too far, high temperature | Reduce gun distance, adjust technique; upgrade to slower grade in hot weather |
| Sagging | Too much thinner, heavy wet coat, slow evaporation | Reduce thinner amount, apply thinner coats |
| Poor gloss | Weak flow, dry spray, contaminated surface | Improve surface cleaning, adjust thinner ratio, use suitable thinner grade |
| Pinholes | Air trapped, contamination, improper drying | Filter paint, clean surface, avoid excessive film thickness |
| Metallic clouding | Uneven basecoat spray, wrong flash-off, poor reducer balance | Spray lighter control coat and keep consistent overlap |
| Rough surface | Poor atomization, paint too thick, dirty spray gun | Clean spray gun, adjust viscosity and pressure |
| Slow drying | Too much thinner, low temperature, wrong thinner grade | Reduce thinner amount, use suitable seasonal grade |
