Product Selection Guide

Choose VSM VS-D1030S when the repair surface needs more than simple color coverage.

It is designed for body shop processes where body filler transitions, fine sanding scratches, old paint repair zones or epoxy-primed areas need to be leveled before the final color coat. The cured film provides a sandable intermediate layer that helps make the final paint surface more even and visually consistent.

Recommended for
  • Repaired steel panels
  • Fully cured body filler areas
  • Sanded epoxy primer
  • Stable, sanded old paint coatings
  • Spot repair and blend repair zones
  • Full vehicle refurbishment projects
Not recommended for direct application on
  • Stainless steel
  • Galvanized steel

For these metal types, use a suitable dedicated adhesion or corrosion-protection primer first.

Product Overview

VSM 2K Primer Surfacer VS-D1030S is a two-component acrylic polyurethane primer surfacer used with VSM VS-D1030H Primer Surfacer Hardener.

The product is intended for automotive repair painting where the substrate has already been repaired, stabilized and sanded. It helps cover fine surface imperfections and creates a workable sanding base before applying compatible basecoat, solid-color topcoat or clear coat systems.

Its defined application process—4:1:2 mixing, two spray coats, controlled flash-off and P800–P1000 finishing—supports standardized workshop operations and helps reduce rework caused by visible repair edges, sanding scratches or uneven substrate preparation.

Main Advantages
4:1:2 Defined Mixing System

The primer, hardener and reducer are mixed at a clear volume ratio:

VS-D1030S Primer:VS-D1030H Hardener:Reducer=4:1:2VS-D1030H Hardener:Reducer=4:1:2

This supports repeatable viscosity and spraying conditions when the same process is followed.

Made for Repair Transitions

Useful for managing fine scratches, body filler edges and mild unevenness after repair sanding.

2K Cured Film

The acrylic polyurethane system is designed to form a more stable primer layer after curing than a typical one-component intermediate primer.

Short, Predictable Pot Life

The activated product remains workable for approximately 30 minutes at 25°C, supporting fast production while encouraging fresh-batch mixing.

Ambient or Bake-Dry Workflow

Can be dried at room temperature or accelerated in a 60°C bake booth, allowing workshops to choose according to their equipment and delivery schedule.

Sanding-Friendly Intermediate Layer

After full cure, wet sanding with P800–P1000 prepares the surface for a smoother appearance under the finish coat.

Complete Application Workflow
Step 1 — Confirm the Substrate

Suitable substrates include prepared steel, stable old paint, cured epoxy primer and fully cured body filler. Confirm that old paint is stable and that damaged or delaminated coatings have been removed.

Step 2 — Sand the Repair Area

Sand the prepared surface with P400–P600 by dry sanding or wet sanding.

The aim is to remove gloss, refine the repair transition and provide a consistent mechanical profile for primer surfacer adhesion.

Step 3 — Remove Contamination

Remove sanding dust completely, then degrease the area. Allow the surface to dry before spraying.

Step 4 — Mix Fresh Material

Mix by volume:

Material Ratio
VSM VS-D1030S Primer Surfacer 4
VSM VS-D1030H Hardener 1
Compatible Reducer 2

Mix thoroughly. Prepare only the quantity that can be sprayed within approximately 30 minutes at 25°C.

Step 5 — Apply Two Controlled Coats

Use a gravity-feed spray gun with a 1.5–1.7 mm nozzle at 1.8–2.5 kg/cm².

Apply two even coats from a distance of 15–20 cm, allowing approximately 5–10 minutes flash-off between coats at 25°C.

Step 6 — Dry Completely
Drying Method Dust-Free Fully Dry
Ambient, 25°C Approx. 5 min Approx. 30 min
Bake, 60°C Approx. 2 min Approx. 12 min
Step 7 — Finish Sanding

After the film is fully dry, wet sand with P800–P1000 abrasive paper. Remove all sanding residue before applying the next compatible coating layer.

Troubleshooting for Professional Workshops
Symptom Common Cause Corrective Action
Primer remains soft Incorrect ratio, incomplete mixing, low temperature or thick film Verify 4:1:2 ratio, mix thoroughly, control film build and allow full drying
Surface sands unevenly Insufficient cure or uneven application Extend drying time if needed and apply controlled, even coats
Pinholes appear Heavy application, trapped solvent or insufficient flash-off Avoid wet flooding; allow 5–10 minutes between coats
Runs or sagging Gun too close, slow movement, excessive material output Maintain 15–20 cm spray distance and use steady overlap
Repair edge shows after topcoat Poor filler transition, insufficient primer coverage or incomplete sanding Refine the repair area before priming and sand primer evenly with P800–P1000
Poor topcoat adhesion Dust, oil, silicone or inadequate sanding Clean thoroughly after sanding and confirm coating compatibility
Material gels in the cup Activated material held beyond pot life Mix smaller batches and do not reuse expired activated material

How It Supports the Final Finish

A topcoat cannot fully hide every defect below it. Fine sanding marks, unstable filler edges and irregular repair profiles may become more obvious after color coat and clear coat application, particularly on dark colors, metallic finishes and high-gloss systems.

VSM VS-D1030S is used to establish a more controlled intermediate surface. After correct application and P800–P1000 wet sanding, it can help support:

  • More even color-coat coverage
  • Reduced visibility of fine repair transitions
  • Cleaner blending around localized repair zones
  • Better visual uniformity of gloss and texture
  • More consistent preparation before clear coat application

It does not replace proper body filler work, sanding discipline or substrate cleaning.

Comparison: VSM System vs. Basic Low-Cost Primer Surfacers
Evaluation Area VSM VS-D1030S with VS-D1030H Common Basic Primer Surfacer
System Design Matched 2K primer and hardener system Hardener selection or formulation may be less controlled
Repair Focus Designed for old paint, body filler and epoxy-primer repair stages Often used mainly for basic coverage
Surface Leveling Supports fine scratch and transition management May need repeated coats or more manual correction
Cured Film 2K cured acrylic polyurethane structure May vary depending on resin type and hardener quality
Drying Control Approx. 30 min at 25°C or 12 min at 60°C Drying consistency may differ by product and condition
Sanding Base Intended for P800–P1000 finishing before topcoat Sanding hardness and uniformity may vary
Workflow Clear mixing and application procedure More dependent on individual operator practice
Total Repair Cost Can help reduce correction, waiting and rework steps Lower purchase cost may result in extra sanding or repainting work

This comparison is a general product-positioning reference. Actual results depend on surface preparation, film thickness, spray technique, drying conditions and the full coating system.
