Product Overview
In a repair workshop, most paint failures do not start from the clear coat. They start from the bottom layer.
When bare metal, sanded old paint, welded panels or body filler are not sealed correctly, problems can appear after the car leaves the shop: rust marks come back, paint edges lift, blistering appears around repair zones, or the new coating separates from the substrate.
VSM VF708 2K Epoxy Primer is designed to solve these bottom-layer problems. It is a two-component epoxy primer used with VSM V2288 Epoxy Primer Hardener to form a dense, chemically cured protective film between the substrate and the later coating layers.
For body shops, VF708 works as a reliable first primer layer before 2K primer surfacer, basecoat and clear coat. It helps improve adhesion, seal unstable substrates, block moisture and reduce after-repair corrosion risk.
It is suitable for bare steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, old paint surfaces, putty surfaces, FRP, carbon steel and machinery metal parts after proper sanding and cleaning.
Why Body Shops Use Epoxy Primer Before Repainting
-
To Stop Rust from Coming Back
Bare steel starts oxidizing quickly after sanding, especially in humid or coastal areas. If normal primer surfacer is sprayed directly on bare metal, it may not provide enough corrosion protection.
VF708 forms a dense epoxy film that helps isolate moisture, salt and corrosive materials from the metal surface.
-
To Make the Whole Paint System Hold Stronger
A refinish system is only as strong as its first layer. VF708 provides strong adhesion to metal and properly prepared substrates, helping the later primer surfacer and topcoat stay stable.
This is especially important for accident repair, replacement panels, welded areas and repaired edges.
-
To Seal Old Paint and Putty Surfaces
Old paint and body filler may absorb solvent unevenly or react with new coatings. VF708 helps create a sealing layer, reducing risks such as lifting, biting, blistering and uneven absorption.
-
To Improve Repair Durability
For commercial vehicles, trucks, engineering vehicles and cars used in harsh climates, bottom-layer corrosion protection is critical. VF708 helps extend the service life of the repair coating system.
Product Structure and Working Principle
VSM VF708 is not just a “primer color layer”. It is a chemically cured epoxy protection layer.

After curing, the film performs three key functions:
| Function |
What It Means in Real Repair Work |
| Adhesion bridge |
Helps later coatings bond to metal and repaired substrates |
| Anti-corrosion barrier |
Reduces water and salt contact with the metal surface |
| Substrate sealer |
Isolates old paint, putty and sensitive surfaces before the next layer |
Key Features
Strong Adhesion to Multiple Substrates
VF708 can be used on properly prepared steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, old paint, body filler and FRP. It is suitable for workshops handling different vehicle materials every day.
Excellent Anti-Rust Performance
The dense epoxy layer helps protect bare metal from moisture and corrosion, especially on sanded steel panels, welded areas and repaired metal surfaces.
2K Chemical Curing for Stable Film Strength
Used with VSM V2288 hardener, VF708 cures through a two-component crosslinking reaction, giving better film strength and durability than simple air-dry primer systems.
Good Sealing Effect
VF708 helps seal porous or unstable substrates such as putty, old paint edges and metal surfaces, reducing solvent attack, absorption marks and lifting problems.
Practical Pot Life for Workshop Jobs
At 25°C, the mixed material remains usable for about 2 hours, giving painters enough time for multi-panel repair or several small parts without constant remixing.
Suitable for Sanding Before Primer Surfacer
After full drying, VF708 can be sanded with P600 before applying 2K primer surfacer, supporting stable intercoat adhesion.
Complete Matched System
VF708 is used with its dedicated VSM V2288 Epoxy Primer Hardener, helping reduce compatibility risk compared with random hardener matching.
Application Scenarios by Substrate
-
Bare Steel / Bare Iron
This is the most common use for epoxy primer. After body repair or sanding, exposed steel must be protected before rust starts.
Recommended use: accident repair, welded panels, sanded-through edges, replacement panels.
-
Galvanized Steel
Many modern vehicles use galvanized panels. VF708 helps improve adhesion and sealing on properly sanded galvanized surfaces.
Recommended use: door skins, body panels, replacement parts, structural repair areas.
-
Aluminum Panels
Aluminum surfaces are sensitive to contamination and oxide film. After sanding and degreasing, VF708 helps improve coating adhesion and corrosion resistance.
Recommended use: aluminum hoods, doors, motorcycle parts, modified vehicle parts.
-
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is harder for coating systems to grip. VF708 helps provide an adhesion base when the surface is properly abraded and cleaned.
Recommended use: special vehicle parts, metal accessories, industrial panels.
-
Old Paint Film
If the old paint film is firm, not powdery, not cracked and not peeling, VF708 can be applied after sanding to help isolate the old layer before new coating.
Recommended use: used car refurbishment, old car repainting, repair areas with mixed old coatings.
-
Putty / Body Filler Surface
Body filler can absorb solvent unevenly. VF708 helps seal the surface and reduce later problems such as mapping, sinking or uneven topcoat appearance.
Recommended use: repaired dents, large-area body filler correction, accident vehicle refinishing.
-
FRP / Fiberglass
FRP panels are commonly found on modified parts, commercial vehicle parts and engineering vehicle components. VF708 helps improve bonding after thorough sanding and cleaning.
Recommended use: modified bumpers, fiberglass panels, truck accessories.
-
Carbon Steel and Machinery Metal Parts
Beyond automotive refinishing, VF708 can also be used for machinery parts and metal components requiring anti-corrosion primer protection.
Recommended use: agricultural machinery, construction equipment, truck parts, steel components.
Real Workshop Use Cases
Case 1: Accident Car Fender Repair
After dent repair and sanding, several areas of the fender are exposed to bare metal. Applying VF708 before primer surfacer helps protect the repair zone from rust and improves adhesion for the following layers.
Case 2: Used Car Full Refinish
An old vehicle has mixed paint layers, body filler areas and exposed edges. VF708 is used as a sealing layer to reduce reaction between old coatings and new paint.
Case 3: Truck Panel Repainting
A commercial truck operates in rain, mud and outdoor conditions. VF708 is applied as the anti-corrosion base layer before primer surfacer and topcoat to improve long-term durability.
Case 4: Coastal Market Repair Shop
In humid and salt-air environments, ordinary primer systems may fail faster. VF708 helps workshops reduce rust return and blistering after repair.

FAQ
Q1: Why should I use epoxy primer instead of spraying primer surfacer directly on bare metal?
A: Primer surfacer is mainly for filling and leveling. It is not designed as the strongest anti-rust layer. VF708 epoxy primer provides better adhesion, sealing and corrosion protection on bare metal before primer surfacer.
Q2: Can VF708 be applied over body filler?
A: Yes, VF708 can be applied over properly sanded and cleaned body filler surfaces. It helps seal the filler and reduce solvent absorption before applying primer surfacer.
Q3: Can I apply putty over VF708 epoxy primer?
A: In many repair systems, epoxy primer can be used before or after putty depending on the workshop process. If applying putty over epoxy primer, make sure the epoxy layer is fully cured and sanded to provide mechanical adhesion. Always follow the full system recommendation.
Q4: What happens if the metal surface is not sanded before spraying VF708?
A: Poor sanding reduces mechanical adhesion. The primer may not bond properly, especially on galvanized steel, aluminum or stainless steel. Metal surfaces should be sanded with P320–P400 and cleaned before spraying.
Q5: Can VF708 prevent rust in coastal or humid areas?
A: VF708 helps reduce rust risk by forming a dense epoxy barrier that blocks moisture and corrosive media. It is suitable for humid, coastal and salt-exposed environments when applied over properly prepared surfaces.
Q6: How many coats should I spray?
A: Spray two thin coats. At 25°C, allow about 5 minutes flash-off between coats. Avoid applying one heavy coat because it may slow drying and trap solvent.
Q7: Do I need to sand VF708 before applying 2K primer surfacer?
A: Yes. After VF708 is fully dry, sand with P600 before applying 2K primer surfacer. This improves intercoat adhesion and creates a better surface for the next layer.
Q8: Is VF708 suitable for trucks and engineering machinery?
A: Yes. VF708 is suitable for commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, agricultural machinery, construction machinery and metal parts that need stronger anti-corrosion primer protection.
